Every spring, crowds gather at parks planted with cherry trees, to experience the brief annual show of pink blossoms smothering the bare canopies before the trees leaf out.  Just beneath the ephemeral blossoms, however, is an equally fascinating and colourful sight, as brightly coloured lichen colonize the cracks and forks of the cherry trunk
