Porphyry island, a small rocky island of volcanic basalt jutting out of Lake Superior, 40 km from Thunder Bay, holds a dizzying display of biodiversity.  Undeveloped but for a lighthouse and a small cluster of buildings, the virgin boreal forest of the island drips with lichen, mosses, fungi and more. A recently felled balsam fir tree offers a unique opportunity for a different perspective, lichen-crusted branches radiating out as viewed from the apex of the tree
